Spanish Composition
Basic composition course; problems of written Spanish and principles of Spanish stylistic patterns; weekly written exercises. To be taken concurrently with Practical Review of Spanish Grammar I or II.
Practical Review of Spanish Grammar
Review of major challenges in Spanish grammar, including the verb system (major tenses and moods, morphology, and aspect), areas of contrast with English, and some lexical/semantic issues. Prerequisite: four semesters of Spanish or equivalent (Elementary Proficiency).
Practical Review of Spanish Grammar II
Overview of major challenges in Spanish grammar, including the verb system (major tenses and moods, morphology, and aspect), areas of contrast with English, and some lexical/semantic issues. Prerequisite: Practical Review of Spanish Grammar I or equivalent.
Oral Spanish
Practice in speaking Spanish; to be taken concurrently with Practical Review of Spanish Grammar I or II or Advanced Spanish Grammar. Spanish Composition Basic composition course; problems of written Spanish and principles of Spanish stylistic patterns; weekly written exercises. To be taken concurrently with Practical Review of Spanish Grammar I or II.
Introduction to Literary Analysis
An introduction to literary analysis and interpretation. Emphasis will be placed upon close reading and critical analysis of texts representing different genres and periods in Spain and Spanish America.
The Structure of Spanish (Advanced Spanish Grammar)
Intensive study and analysis of Spanish grammar including tense, aspect, and mood; morphological problems; syntactic variation; style in oral and written expression; brief discussion of dialectal variation. Advanced hours credit. Prerequisite: Practical Review of Spanish Grammar I or equivalent (five semesters of Spanish or Intermediate Proficiency).
Spanish Cultural Studies: Cultures of Spain
Survey of Spanish culture from the 15th century to present times. History, traditions, customs and current events. Extensive reading in Spanish. Advanced hours credit. Can be taken concurrently with: Practical Review of Spanish Grammar I or IIor Advanced Spanish Grammar.
Spanish Art History
An introductory course to the mayor art periods and artists in Spain: Islamic art, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Mannerism, Neoclassicism, Eclecticism, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Gaudí, Picasso, Dalí, Miró, José Guerrero. Extensive Art History vocabulary in Spanish. Advanced hours credit. Prerequisite or concurrent with Practical Review of Spanish Grammar I or equivalent (four semesters of Spanish or Elementary Proficiency).
Arab – Islamic Cultural Studies
An introduction to the diversity of Islam: Religion, History, Traditions, Art, Social issues, Science and current events. With a focus on the history of Spanish Al-Andalus. Taught in Spanish. Advanced hours credit. Prerequisite or concurrent with Practical Review of Spanish Grammar I or equivalent (four semesters of Spanish or Elementary Proficiency).
